Ladenburg lädt!

Ladenburg a town a little north of Heidelberg is another charming town with cobblestone alleys where you can walk right next to ancient crumbling Roman walls. The town's Roman history actually dates back to the first century!!! But even before that, the first Celtic settlements in Ladenburg date back to 3000BC. All this history can be quite overwhelming at times.

Hubby and me have been to this town so many times but then everytime we find it so beautiful we keep going back. I remember that the very first time we visited we were quite oblivious to the great history of this place, walking around telling each other that everything looked so old and ancient.

If you are looking for a nice place to go on Sunday for brunch the Kaffehaus is quite good, especially love the little square and the surroundings where they are located. Hubby ordered the Belgian breakfast on the menu and at the end the waiter surprised him by turning up with a large crepe filled with fresh fruits.

The town is also known for its many beautiful half timbered houses dating back from the 15th to the 17th century.

Ladenburg's cuisine apparently has a lot of Onions and Potatoes as main ingredients. They even have a restaurant dedicated to potato and onion lovers namely Die Kartoffel and Gasthof Zwiwwel. We were still full from our brunch so we did not go to these restaurants this time around.

I was especially tempted when I saw this board which boasted of specialities from Grandma'S kitchen. Everything sounded yummy on the menu.

The weather was nice and dreamy a perfect Sunday morning to stroll around and take in the sights of this beautiful town.

Almost like a day in Spring!

Last weekend we had brilliant weather!  I mean technically we are supposed to be in the middle of peak winter weather, but looks like we have brought back some great weather back from our vacation. Since we are back, from the beginning of Jan we have been having some sunny Spring like weather.

Last Sunday morning we decided to go to the Heidelberg old town or Altstadt for brunch followed by a stroll through town. Looks like a lot of others had the same idea, the place was bustling with activity and everybody seemed to be in a jolly old mood.

It was lovely to walk over the Old Bridge and little bunny insisted that she cycled all the way which was great. It felt like I spotted the color red in everything that I saw. The red Porsche driving down the bridge, the red blankets on the chairs waiting to warm its seaters, little bunny's red winter jacket, the red tiled rooftops, the red satin ribbon around the wrought iron boards everything looked just lovely and red.

This young man doled out some free music for everybody walking on the Old Bridge.

I really wish that the next weekend which is around the corner is also going to have some promising weather.

A glimpse into the Medieval world

Last weekend the beautiful town of Heidelberg celebrated the Heidelberger Herbst a festival welcoming the beginning of Autumn. This year we decided to first go to the old part of the town called the Altstadt and then walk through the main street all the way down. I am so glad that we decided to take this path as in the square called the Universitätsplatz we had the chance to experience life in the Medieval ages.

Music from the Medieval times was presented by a group called Heurekapelle, a fun group and they played and performed some great music.

You  could even try your hand at archery if you wanted.

Every stall I entered seemed to transform me back into time, I wished that we were also dressed in appropriate costumes to merge into the whole theme.

The costumes were all cloak like long and flowing, clearly a way to combat the cold and rain in those times I guess.

After spending couple of hours in this medieval village walking through the streets again felt so modern and strange.

Time is flying

Its less than a week since it was Christmas. My mind is still fresh with all the sights from the Christmas markets we got to visit this time around.

I bet there is a huge profit made by the tradesmen in these markets. Especially because each of these markets are so elaborate in their set up but they are also non-existent within a matter of weeks. I am sure there is a lot of strategy and thought put into making sure that each market makes up for their return on investment. Whatever be it I am already looking forward to visiting them again next year.
